ROGER SWAINS TALK ON JANUARY 25 WILL BENEFIT CARES To millions of Americans, Roger Swain is the original celebrity gardener, the man in the red suspenders who visited their homes weekly for 15 years as host of the Victory Garden on PBS. Swain brings his wit and wisdom to Dade City on Thursday, January 26, at the Dade City Womens Club, Palm Avenue and Seventh Street. In his 7:30 p.m. talk entitled I Saw It on TV: The Promises and Perils of Gardening in Front of the Camera, Swain will take the audience behind the scenes of Victory Garden and his newer show, HGTVs People, Places and Plants. Preceding the talk, a social hour at 6:30 p.m. will offer members of the public an opportunity to meet Swain while enjoying kumquat cakes, pies, and cookies, along with chocolate-dipped kumquats and specialty coffees. Tickets for the evening are $10 per person, with all proceeds going to CARES, Community Aging and Retirement Services. Known for presentations that entertain as well as educate, Swain delights audiences across the country by combining the scientific knowledge of a biologist, the enthusiasm of a gardener, the style of a writer and the humor of a storyteller. Known as the Champion of the Kumquat, he is making his tenth annual trek from New Hampshire to Dade City for the Kumquat Festival. Swains recent television program, People, Places and Plants, will be released in a 5-disc DVD set on March 27, 2007. First aired in March 2003, the program features his commentary, Food for Thought.
